My name is Jean Paul Establet, I was born in 1954 in Algeria. My
father was
a wine -grower, my mother a painter.
Very early I became interested in painting, particularly oil painting
and watercolour.
In 1979, watching a silk painter at work at an exhibition, I became fascinated
by
seeing the colour painted onto the silk. I had found my metier !
It was the beginning for me of an ongoing unfinished journey of discovery
as my
style evolved and my technique was refined. Silk painting for me has been
the medium through what I have expressed best my imagination and creativity,
fed by all the other forces and influences in life.
The painters who have influenced me are very different :
MONET : He was the first master I copied. For someone self-taught like
me, a great revelation. COROT : I like for the lightness of his trees,
and his imagination in peopling his pictures with figures thought up in
the studio.
PICASSO : taught me that there are no boundaries in painting, that creation
is liberation and delight. He is probably my greatest inspiration.
CONSTABLE : for his wonderfull skies, larger than life.
MATISSE : With his bright palette and cut gouaches, he taught me to be
more daring.
VAN GOGH : like Picasso, opened up to me the doors to imagination. Never
mind that he's wandered away from reality, quite the contrary....
GAUGUIN : For the colours, pinks and reds and greens and yellows juxtaposed,
but never mixed. And Kandinsky, Soutine, Manet, Turner, Modigliani and
so many others.
